Hawaiian Petroglyphs (“Ki’i Pohaku”) are pictures that ancient
Hawaiians carved in stones throughout the Hawaiian Islands. They
depicted events, people, animals, activities and religious symbols.
One of the most well known Petroglyphs in the sea turtle (Honu)
which is a guardian (aumakua) for some Hawaiian families. A
family member is responsible for caring for the (aumakua) in
return the aumakua protects and assists family members.
Today the green sea turtle is protected as an endangered species.
